Sealdah court convicts Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment in RG Kar rape and murder case
Sealdah court sentenced Sanjoy Roy to life imprisonment for the rape and murder of an on-duty junior doctor in August.
"You will remain in prison for the rest of your life," Judge Anirban Das said while reading the verdict.
The victim's parents will receive compensation of ₹17 lakh — ₹10 lakh for the victim's death and ₹7 lakh for the rape.

As Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th President of the United States, he issued a series of executive orders, overturning many directives from former President Joe Biden.
Shortly after taking the oath and delivering a powerful inaugural address, Trump signed his first executive order at Washington’s Capital One Arena, requiring all federal employees to return to full-time office work.
In total, Trump signed 80 executive orders, reversing key policies of the previous Democratic administration. He withdrew the U.S. from the Paris Agreement and the World Health Organization, temporarily froze new federal regulations, and dropped all federal charges against the January 6 rioters.
Consent for sex doesn’t mean consent to film, share private moments: High Court
The Delhi High Court has said that agreeing to have sex does not mean that someone can take private videos or share them on social media without permission. This decision was made while the court was refusing to grant bail to a man who is accused of taking and posting private videos of a woman without her consent.
Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma made this ruling on January 17. The man is accused of taking inappropriate videos of the woman during their sexual relationship and sharing them online without her approval.
India is taking back 18,000 Indians from the US
According to reports, around 18,000 Indian migrants are expected to be sent back to India, though the actual number might be higher due to the difficulty of tracking undocumented individuals. This is regarded as a critical move toward keeping friendly ties with the US administration, which has been bent on blocking illegal migration.
Uttarakhand Cabinet approves new Uniform Civil Code
The Cabinet led by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami approved the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) manual during a meeting at the state secretariat. The dates for its implementation will be announced soon. The approval came after making some changes to the recently prepared rules for implementing the UCC. The amended rules were examined by the Law Department before being finalised during the Cabinet meeting.
Trump revokes anti-discrimination law for federal workplaces
The newly-sworn U.S. President Donald Trump overturned a long-standing executive order that had been in place for 60 years, protecting workers from discrimination in the workplace. The order, known as Executive Order 11246, required federal contractors to hire workers without discrimination based on gender identity, sexual orientation, race, colour, religion, sex, or national origin. By revoking this order, the Trump administration has removed these protections for workers employed by companies that do business with the government.
Taliban says no to Trump’s demand to return US weapons worth $ 7 billion

The Taliban says, according to Bloomberg, that they need arms, ammunition, and advanced military equipment to combat the ISIS-K (Islamic State Khorasan) terrorist organization.
