Sealdah court sentenced Sanjoy Roy to life imprisonment for the rape and murder of an on-duty junior doctor in August "You will remain in prison for the rest of your life,"

The CBI had demanded the death sentence for him on account of his serious crime.

According to the CBI, this is a "rarest of rare" crime, meaning it's a very extreme case. They mentioned that the victim, a young doctor, had been working for 36 hours straight at the hospital to help patients before being attacked. The CBI believes the death penalty should be given to set an example and restore confidence in society.

Roy was found guilty by a special court on Saturday about six months after his arrest for raping and killing the doctor. The judge said that the crime was so serious that he might either give Roy the death penalty or a life sentence. However, junior doctors at RG Kar Hospital where the doctor used to work are unhappy with the decision. They wanted more questions answered and felt there could be other people involved in the crime. They asked for a deeper investigation into what happened and why.

What is the RG Kar rape murder case?

The RG Kar rape-murder case involved the tragic death of a 31-year-old junior doctor at the RG Kar hospital in Kolkata. Her body was found on August 9 last year in a seminar room at the hospital. This crime sent shock waves with anger throughout India as doctors in West Bengal protested for justice and safety in the hospitals.

The case was handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) as the Kolkata Police could not solve it. The trial began in November, three months after the incident, and ended on January 9. The CBI has asked for the harshest punishment for Roy.
