A Sealdah court will announce its judgment on Saturday in the case of the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, which happened in August last year. The verdict will be delivered by the designated judge on January 18, according to news agency PTI.
The RG Kar case, which caused widespread outrage across the country last year, is being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The Calcutta High Court transferred the case from the Kolkata Police to the CBI.
The CBI has requested the death penalty for Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with the city police, who is accused of raping and murdering the postgraduate trainee at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in north Kolkata on August 9 last year.
The father of the deceased doctor expressed hope that the court will deliver a fair judgment, as the family continues to seek justice for their daughter. He mentioned that they are pursuing the case through various courts, with one matter still pending before the High Court and another now before the Supreme Court.
He also pointed out that the DNA report had confirmed the involvement of other individuals in the crime, adding to the family's belief that justice would be served once all the facts were fully considered.
About the RG-Kar case
The RG Kar rape-murder case involves the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor, whose body was discovered on August 9 in the hospital's seminar room. Civic volunteer Sanjay Roy was arrested in connection with the crime.
The incident sparked nationwide outrage, with junior doctors in Kolkata protesting for justice and stronger security in hospitals. After this, the Calcutta High Court transferred the case to the CBI, which also filed a chargesheet regarding financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The chargesheet named former principal Sandip Ghosh and others for financial misconduct.
Apart from the corruption case, Sandip Ghosh was also questioned about the murder, and the CBI conducted lie detector tests on him during the investigation.Due to delays in filing the chargesheet, some of the accused, including Abhijit Mondal and Sandip Ghosh, were granted bail. The in-camera trial for the rape and murder case began on November 12.
After the trial concluded on Thursday, the Sealdah court said the judgment would be delivered on January 18. The victim's parents believe others were involved in the crime and hope all accused will be arrested and tried.
