As Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th President of the United States, he issued a series of executive orders, overturning many directives from former President Joe Biden.

Shortly after taking the oath and delivering a powerful inaugural address, Trump signed his first executive order at Washington’s Capitol One Arena, requiring all federal employees to return to full-time office work.

In total, Trump signed 80 executive orders, reversing key policies of the previous Democratic administration. He withdrew the U.S. from the Paris Agreement and the World Health Organization, temporarily froze new federal regulations, and dropped all federal charges against the January 6 rioters.

Here are some of the key executive orders that Trump passed after swearing in as the new President of the United States.

1. Measures on immigration and ending birthright citizenship

One of the important executives that Trump signed was to end birthright citizenship for children of undocumented immigrants born in the United States. This move challenges the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

While speaking to the media, Trump said,The federal government will no longer grant automatic citizenship to children of illegal immigrants born in the U.S. We will also strengthen the vetting and screening process for illegal immigrants.”

In his inaugural address, Trump also announced plans to use an old wartime law, the Alien Enemies Act of 1798, to target foreign gang members in the U.S. This law was last used during World War II to detain non-citizens of Japanese, German, and Italian descent in internment camps.

2. Withdrawal from the Paris Agreement and WHO

Donald Trump’s first actions as president also included declaring a national energy emergency and withdrawing the U.S. from the 2015 Paris Agreement, a move similar to his previous term. He also signed orders to expand oil and gas drilling in Alaska, undoing Biden’s protections for Arctic lands and coastal waters.

Trump also announced the U.S. exit from the World Health Organization (WHO), blaming it for poor handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and other health issues. He argued the WHO was influenced by politics and said the U.S. was paying more than its fair share compared to countries like China.

3. Delaying Tik Tok ban

Donald Trump signed an executive order on Monday, delaying the ban on the popular short-video app TikTok by at least 75 days. The ban had been initially scheduled to take effect on January 19, 2025. When asked about the purpose of the order, Trump stated,It just gives me the right to sell it or close it... and we’ll make that determination later.”

In his first series of actions as U.S. president, Trump directed the attorney general not to enforce the law immediately, giving his administration the time to decide the best course of action regarding TikTok. This delay allows the government to explore possible solutions, including the potential sale of the app or other regulatory measures.

4. Pardoning Capitol rioters

In line with a promise he made during his election campaign, Trump signed an executive order on Monday, pardoning almost all of those charged in the January 6 Capitol riots. Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said,What they’ve done to these people is outrageous.”

The order also reduced the sentences of 14 members from far-right groups, including the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers, some of whom had been convicted of seditious conspiracy. Additionally, the order instructed the U.S. Attorney General to drop all ongoing legal cases related to the riot.

 5. Back into office for federal workers, and government hiring halted

One of Donald Trump's first executive orders as president required all federal workers to return to their offices immediately and imposed a hiring freeze across all government agencies.

Trump explained,I will implement an immediate regulation freeze, which will prevent Biden’s bureaucrats from continuing their regulations. He also stated that the temporary hiring freeze would ensure that only competent individuals, loyal to the American people, would be hired moving forward.

6. Recognition of only two genders

Trump issued an order declaring that the United States will officially recognize only two genders—male and female. He also reversed numerous policies from the Biden administration aimed at promoting racial equity and protecting the rights of gay and transgender people.

The order mandates that the government usesexinstead ofgenderin its policies and requires that all government-issued identification documents, including passports and visas, reflect an individual’s biological classification as either male or female.

7. Approves Elon Musk-led DOGE advisory group

As the new President of the United States, Donald Trump signed an executive order to establish the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a new advisory group aimed at implementing significant cuts to the U.S. government. This move, which included a focus on streamlining operations, quickly attracted lawsuits challenging its actions. Also, the advisory group is led by Elon Musk, bringing further attention and controversy to the plan.
