Luxury fashion brand Prada has sparked outrage online after launching a metal safety pin brooch priced at $775 (around ₹69,000). The accessory, which features a simple golden pin wrapped with colourful threads and a small Prada charm, has gone viral for its shocking price tag.
Social media users and fashion influencers have criticized the brand, calling the product “overpriced” and “ridiculous.” A fashion influencer known as Black Swan Sazy mocked the accessory in a viral video, saying, “I will once again ask rich people what it is that you are doing with your money. Because if you can’t think of anything, I assure you the rest of us can.” Another user commented, “I could make that,” while one joked, “My grandma could do it better.” Following the backlash, the link to the product on Prada’s official website appeared to be broken.
Now, what exactly are safety pins for? These small metal pins are used to fasten clothes, sarees, or fabric pieces together. They are handy in avoiding wardrobe mishaps and are found in almost every household. A pack of these pins usually costs only ₹10 or ₹20. If attached to a decorative brooch, the price may vary slightly depending on the design.
Many women keep safety pins in their handbags for emergencies, and older Indian women can often be seen wearing one around their bangles for easy access. As Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory once said, “It’s better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.”
Because they are cheap and reusable, people hardly worry about losing them. But Prada’s ₹69,000 version has left everyone stunned. While most safety pins are practical everyday items, Prada’s designer pin turns a common household object into a luxury statement, one that has become a target of online humor and disbelief.
