A 57-year-old woman, Sudeshna Jena, has been arrested for allegedly setting her landlord on fire in Odisha’s Ganjam district. The victim, 72-year-old Harihar Sahu, died after being badly burnt.
The police said Jena killed Sahu to get his properties. Senior police officer Saravana Vivek M shared that Jena and Sahu were in a relationship for the last five years. Sahu was a retired revenue inspector.
The incident happened early Thursday morning when Jena entered Sahu’s room while he was sleeping. She poured kerosene on him and set him on fire. Sahu was first taken to a hospital in Berhampur. Later, he was moved to a hospital in Cuttack, where he died from his injuries.
The police officer said the murder was planned. Jena tried to hide the evidence by throwing the victim’s mobile phone inside the courtyard. She also threw the plastic kerosene bottle into the fire.
To avoid suspicion, Jena pretended to help Sahu by calling the neighbours. She even claimed that two unknown people set him on fire. But the police investigation proved otherwise, and she was arrested for the crime.
The case is now under further investigation by the police.
