A woman in Gurugram has been arrested for creating a fake Instagram account to send death threats to both herself and her husband. The woman, identified as Priya Mishra, lives in Tower Q, The Courtyard, Sohna, Gurugram. She was arrested on August 6 by the Cyber Crime South Police Station team.
According to police officials, the case began on May 29 when Priya filed a complaint at the Cyber Crime South Police Station. In her complaint, she claimed that she and her husband were receiving threatening messages from an Instagram account supposedly run by another woman.
Based on the complaint, police registered a case under the relevant sections of the law and launched an investigation. The inquiry was led by Assistant Commissioner of Police (Cyber Crime) Priyanshu Diwan (HPS), and a team headed by Inspector Naveen Kumar was assigned to track down the source of the threats.
However, during the investigation, police found that the Instagram account in question had been created and operated by the complainant herself. When questioned, Priya Mishra confessed that she had made the fake account using a different name. She admitted that she had sent threatening messages to her husband and herself using this fake ID.
Police said that the woman had been having personal problems with her husband, which led her to take this extreme step. Her intention was to make it seem like both of them were being targeted by someone else, and by filing a false complaint, she hoped to add credibility to the threats.
The police recovered the mobile phone used to send the messages. It has been seized as evidence. Further investigation is underway to determine if anyone else was involved and to understand the full motive behind her actions.
