A model and digital content creator, Soni Singh, was sexually harassed in broad daylight while waiting for a cab in Gurugram. The incident happened on Friday, August 2, around 11 am, after she returned from a trip to Jaipur.
While waiting for her ride, Soni noticed a man behaving suspiciously. “He kept circling and staring at me. At first, I ignored him, but then I saw his pants were unzipped, and he started masturbating in front of me,” she said in a video shared online. Feeling shocked and disgusted, she tried calling her cab driver, but he didn’t respond. She quickly booked another cab to get away from the scene.
After reaching home, she shared the entire incident on Instagram and X, along with pictures of the man. She expressed how unsafe and helpless she felt, and questioned why women still don’t feel safe in public places, even during the day. Soni also tried calling the police and the women's helpline, but said no one answered. Later, when she did manage to reach someone, she was told to visit the police station to file a complaint in person.
It wasn’t until two days later, on August 4, that her video gained attention online. She appealed to the public for help in identifying the man and criticised ride-hailing services for their lack of response and support. Finally, on August 6, Gurugram Police responded and registered an FIR. Police said they are scanning CCTV footage and working to find the man involved.
Soni Singh, who creates content related to beauty, skincare, and fashion, has nearly 40,000 followers on Instagram. She hopes that her voice will bring justice and spark real action for safer public spaces for women.
