In an incident like the movie Munna Bhai MBBS, a fake doctor who did nearly 50 C-sections (known as cesarean sections) and gynaecology surgeries, has been caught in Assam’s Silchar. The man, Pulok Malakar, was pretending to be a gynaecologist for over 10 years. He was working in two private hospitals in Silchar and carried out many surgeries without having a real medical degree.

He was caught red-handed while doing a caesarean operation inside an operation theatre. “We got some information and started an investigation. After checking all his documents, we found they were fake. He had no real degree and was practising illegally for years,” said police officer Numal Mahatta.

Malakar, who lives in Sribhumi, Assam, was taken to court on Monday. The court sent him to police custody for five days. The Assam government has been cracking down on fake doctors. In January this year, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s government created a special team called the anti-quackery and vigilance cell. This team works with the police to catch fake doctors.

So far, this team has filed more than 10 cases against people practising without real medical degrees. These fake doctors mostly target poor and middle-class people in cities and villages.

The arrest has raised serious concerns about how such a person could work in hospitals for so long without anyone noticing. The police are now investigating how deep this fraud goes and whether others are involved. This incident is a serious warning about the risks of fake doctors and shows the need for stronger checks in hospitals and the health system to protect patients.
