Ex-Karnataka DGP Om Prakash was found dead inside his house in Bengaluru. He was 68. Sources say he had a heated argument with his wife over property matters on the day of his death. During the fight, she allegedly threw chilli powder at him, tied him up, and stabbed him several times. He was also attacked him with a glass bottle.
After the murder, his wife reportedly phoned the wife of another police officer and admitted to the crime. Police rushed to the scene and took both the wife and their daughter into custody for questioning. They were interrogated for nearly 12 hours.
Police say the wife is the main suspect. Om Prakash had multiple stab wounds on his chest and stomach. The couple reportedly had a property dispute that Om Prakash had transferred to a relative. Police are also investigating whether the daughter was involved in the crime.
A case has been registered based on a complaint filed by Om Prakash’s son. The investigation is still underway. Police received information about the death of retired IPS officer Om Prakash around 4 am, according to Bengaluru Additional Commissioner of Police Vikas Kumar.
Om Prakash belonged to the 1981 batch of the Indian Police Service (IPS). He became Karnataka's Director General of Police (DGP) in March 2015. Before that, he served in key roles, including as the head of Fire and Emergency Services and Home Guards.
Reacting to the incident, Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara said, “It’s true that retired DGP Om Prakash has been murdered. As per initial reports, his wife may be involved, but the investigation continues. He worked with me when I was the Home Minister in 2015. He was not just a capable officer but also a good human being. This is truly unfortunate. The full facts will come out after the investigation is complete.”
