US President Donald Trump said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has “assured” him that India will stop buying oil from Russia soon. The statement adds a new chapter to the ongoing tension between Washington and New Delhi over India’s energy ties with Moscow amid the Ukraine conflict.
Trump’s remarks come months after his administration imposed heavy tariffs on Indian exports because of New Delhi’s decision to continue purchasing discounted Russian oil despite Western sanctions.
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said, “He’s assured me there will be no oil purchased from Russia.” He did not give a clear timeline but added, “You know, you can’t do it immediately. It’s a little bit of a process, but the process is going to be over with soon.”
As of now, India has not issued any official statement confirming or denying Trump’s claim.
India’s stand on buying Russian oil
Over the past few months, India has defended its energy trade with Moscow, saying that its top priority is to protect national energy security. Indian officials have maintained that affordable oil imports help keep prices stable at home while global markets remain volatile due to the war in Ukraine.
Relations between India and the US had soured after Trump imposed new tariffs earlier this year. But on Wednesday, Trump hinted that the two leaders were working to restore friendly ties.
On Saturday, Modi met Sergio Gor, the newly appointed US ambassador and a longtime Trump ally. The meeting was widely seen as a positive sign toward improving relations. Following the talks, Gor said the Trump administration values its relationship with India deeply and was “optimistic” after a recent phone call between Trump and Modi.
Known for his direct and colorful comments, Trump once again praised the Indian Prime Minister, saying, “Modi is a great man. He loves Trump.” He even joked, “I don’t want to destroy his political career.”
Calling India “an incredible country,”Trump said he admired Modi’s long political run. “I’ve watched India for years. It’s an incredible country, and every single year you’d have a new leader,” Trump said. “My friend has been there now for a long time.”
