Three personnel from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) lost their lives, and 16 others were injured after their vehicle met with an accident in the Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday morning.
The incident took place around 10:30 am near Kandva in the Basantgarh area when a CRPF vehicle from the 187th battalion overturned. A total of 23 CRPF personnel were onboard and were returning from an operation in Basant Garh.
According to Additional SP Udhampur, Sandeep Bhat, police teams quickly reached the accident site, carried out rescue operations, and moved all the injured personnel to a nearby hospital for treatment.
“While two personnel died on the spot, one succumbed to injuries on the way to the hospital,” officials said.
Union Minister of State for Science and Technology and Udhampur MP Jitendra Singh called the incident “disturbing” and said he had spoken to Udhampur’s Deputy Commissioner, Saloni Rai, who was personally monitoring the situation.
“Rescue measures have been initiated immediately. Locals have voluntarily come forward to assist. All possible help is being ensured,” he posted on X.
Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha also expressed deep sorrow. “Saddened by the loss of CRPF personnel due to an accident near Udhampur. We will never forget their exemplary service to the nation,” he wrote on X, while sending condolences to the families of the deceased and wishing the injured a quick recovery.
He added that he had asked senior officials to provide the best medical care and support.
