A second-year Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) student at Sharda University in Greater Noida allegedly died by suicide on Friday night, causing protests on campus and leading to the arrest of two faculty members.
The student, identified as Jyoti Sharma from Gurugram, was found dead in her hostel room. A suicide note recovered from the scene mentioned the names of two teachers and accused them of mental harassment and humiliation.
In her note, which was accessed by NDTV, Jyoti wrote, “The teachers of PCP and Dental material are to blame,” directly naming two staff members. She further stated, “They mental harassed me. They humiliated me. I have been in stress because of them for a long time. I want them to face the same thing. I am sorry. I can't live like this anymore. I can't.”
Following her family’s complaint, the two named staffers, identified as Mahinder and Shairy, were arrested, said police.
Protests break out at Sharda University
As news of Jyoti’s death spread, students gathered on campus to protest late into the night. Many hostel residents raised slogans, demanding accountability from the university and a fair investigation into the matter.
In response, the university said a "high-power inquiry committee" had been formed to examine the incident and suggest further steps.
“The University is fully cooperating with statutory authorities conducting their own processes,” said the Director of Public Relations. “All required documentation and access have been extended, we will continue to cooperate transparently.”
Sources added that both staff members have also been suspended.
Family members demand justice
The incident has left Jyoti’s family devastated. Her uncle, speaking to ANI, claimed the student had been suffering for years due to the college environment.
“The management and faculty in this college are absolutely zero. Its licence should be revoked. Our daughter was a last-year BDS student here. There is no security here. For our daughter's death, the university's management is responsible. Management mentally tortured her for 2–3 years. That's why she took this step… Justice should be served and culprits must be caught,” he said.
He also alleged that more people were involved than the two arrested so far. “Out of 6-7 culprits, only two were arrested. Police said that they will be arrested within a week,” he added.
Jyoti’s brother, Devender, also shared the same concerns. “My sister committed suicide after being mentally harassed by management and a lecturer, which led her to take this difficult step… there are 3-4 more accused for whom no action has been taken,” he said, urging authorities to act quickly.
Charan Singh, a village representative, said the deceased’s family had been living in Gurugram for many years. According to him, her parents had even met the college faculty days before the incident.
“The college management put so much pressure on the girl that she took her own life… We urge the government to deliver justice for the girl,” Singh said.
Police begin detailed investigation
Greater Noida Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) Sudhir Kumar confirmed that a case had been registered at the Knowledge Park Police Station. A forensic team examined the hostel room for evidence, and the student’s body was sent for a post-mortem.
“The woman’s family and her classmates have been assured of a swift and transparent investigation,” Kumar said.
