Tonk district in Rajasthan has been on high alert after several serious cases of sexual harassment, molestation, and attempted forced religious conversion of girls came to light. These incidents have created fear among local families and sparked protests from Hindutva organizations demanding faster action from authorities.

In one case, a 13-year-old girl was harassed for nearly a month while going to her coaching classes. The main accused, identified as Tahir Mewati, along with several accomplices, reportedly harassed her daily, made lewd comments, tried to force her into marriage, and pressured her to convert to their religion.

The girl also said she was threatened with acid attacks if she refused their demands. Her parents informed the coaching institute manager, Hemraj, who tried to intervene but was beaten by six to seven men outside the institute, an incident captured on CCTV footage.

Police have registered an FIR under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Two of the five accused, including Tahir, have been arrested. In another case, a man named Yunus was arrested after a girl from a different faith claimed he tried to force her into marriage and threatened to circulate intimate videos. In a separate case, a minor girl was allegedly gang-raped by seven accused; six of them, described as minors, have been detained, while one remains absconding.

The rise of these cases has also led to protests by Hindutva organizations, who accuse authorities of being slow and ineffective. Ajay from the ABVP said, “There are many cases in Tonk. Some cases are suppressed, and many girls do not speak up.” Former BJP MLA Ajay Mehta warned that minors have been targeted and called for strong action.

Families of the victims remain scared. The father of the 13-year-old said, “It becomes difficult for our daughters to go out safely under such circumstances.” Police confirmed that investigations are ongoing and that additional arrests may follow as evidence is collected and statements are recorded.

Authorities have set up prevention teams to monitor schools, colleges, and coaching centers across Tonk and are urging anyone with information to come forward. The police continue to work on ensuring the safety of students while trying to catch all those involved in these crimes.
