Four people have been arrested in connection with the stampede that happened outside Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. The incident occurred during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) team’s first-ever IPL win celebrations and tragically killed 11 people earlier this week.

One of the arrested is Nikhil Sosale, a top marketing official for RCB. Police arrested him early morning at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport while he was about to travel to Mumbai. Sosale manages the team’s promotional work and social media and acts as the link between the players and the franchise.

The other arrested individuals are from the event management company DNA Entertainment Private Limited: Sunil Mathew, the Vice President who handles IPL events, and two others named Kiran and Sumanth.

The arrests followed the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The FIR revealed that RCB had announced the event on social media without permission from the authorities.

Following the tragedy, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah ordered the arrest of representatives from RCB, DNA Entertainment, and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA). Police are continuing to investigate and are set to hand over the arrested persons to the Crime Investigation Department.

Two KSCA officials, secretary Shankar and treasurer Jayram, are currently missing. Authorities are trying to locate them, but they were not found at their homes.

The stampede occurred on Wednesday evening as thousands gathered outside the stadium to celebrate RCB’s victory. Over 60 people were injured in the chaos. Due to the incident, Siddaramaiah suspended Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda and other senior officials.

Senior IPS officer Seemanth Kumar Singh was appointed as the new Bengaluru police commissioner immediately. The government’s swift action comes as political tension rises, with the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) demanding the resignations of Siddaramaiah and his deputy D K Shivakumar. The Congress party has accused the BJP of playing "dirty politics."

Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar expressed sadness over the tragedy, saying, “Bengaluru has lost its image” due to the stampede. Families of the victims have blamed the authorities for the lack of proper arrangements that led to the disaster.

The investigation continues as police work to find all responsible parties and prevent such incidents in the future.
