The BJP clarified on Sunday that it will not feature Col Sofia Qureshi and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh in its upcoming campaign. This came after a news report said that Col Qureshi and Wing Commander Singh, who spoke about Operation Sindoor, would be the main faces of a special campaign for women by the BJP. This campaign was to start on June 9, marking 11 years of Modi’s government.
BJP IT chief Amit Malviya said on X that the report is false. He said the party has no plans to use Col Qureshi or Wing Commander Singh in the campaign. He also said that BJP Minority Morcha president Jamal Siddiqui’s comments were misunderstood. Siddiqui only wanted to highlight Col Qureshi as an example of a strong Muslim woman in the community.
About Col Qureshi and Wing Commander Singh
Colonel Sofiya Qureshi and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh are two senior officers in the Indian armed forces who gained national attention for leading the media briefing on Operation Sindoor in May 2025, India’s military response to a terrorist attack. Colonel Qureshi, commissioned in 1999 in the Indian Army’s Corps of Signals, has had a distinguished career including leading an Indian Army contingent at multinational exercises and serving in UN peacekeeping missions. Wing Commander Singh, commissioned in 2019 in the Indian Air Force as a helicopter pilot, has flown over 2,500 hours and was part of an all-women mountaineering expedition. Both have become symbols of women’s growing roles and professionalism in India’s defence forces.
