Regular train passengers will soon get a smoother booking experience as Indian Railways has started a complete upgrade of the Passenger Reservation System (PRS). Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared the update in Lok Sabha on Wednesday, saying the current PRS can book 25,000 tickets per minute.

Vaishnaw explained that “technological upgradation is an ongoing process” for Indian Railways. In a written reply, he said the capacity enhancement and technological improvements are part of a continuous effort. Presently, the booking capacity of the PRS is about 25,000 tickets per minute.

The new PRS upgrade involves upgrading and replacing hardware, software, network equipment, security infrastructure, and other functionalities. It is designed using new technology to handle more features efficiently. Vaishnaw said that the new system is prepared for more than four times the present capacity.

The cost of this upgrade has been sanctioned at Rs 182 crore. This includes all work required to ensure the system is faster, more secure, and capable of handling the growing number of bookings smoothly.

The Railway Minister also talked about improvements in booking web applications. He said that the Railways recently launched the RailOne app, which allows passengers to book both reserved and unreserved tickets on their mobile phones. “This, in effect, brings the PRS facility to the passengers’ palms,” he said.

With this major technological boost, passengers can expect faster ticket booking, reduced errors, and better overall service. The new PRS system aims to make train travel more convenient and efficient for millions of commuters across India.
