Gas has been leaking from an ONGC crude oil well in Assam for the past seven days. Concerned about the situation, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote a letter to Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Puri, saying that ONGC’s response has not been serious or quick enough.

In his letter, the Chief Minister mentioned that local people feel ONGC is not doing enough to stop the leak. He also shared on X (formerly Twitter) that has asked the Union Minister to tell ONGC to take urgent action and control the leak quickly, so the situation doesn’t get worse.

The Assam government is helping people affected by the ONGC gas leak by providing relief and safety support. However, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that ONGC needs to take quicker and stronger action to control the situation and bring things back to normal.

The leak has been going on for several days and is causing a lot of stress in nearby villages. Over 330 families have been moved out of their homes and are being supported by the state government. The Chief Minister has asked Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Puri to tell ONGC to send more experts to the site, work faster, and talk more with the local people to rebuild trust and solve the problem soon.

The gas blowout happened on June 12 at Well No. RDS 147 in the Rudrasagar oil field in Barichuk, Bhatiapar. A private company, SK Petro Services, was working on the well for ONGC. ONGC officials said it was an old well with no oil production and that work was being done to shift the oil zone when the accident occurred. On Tuesday, the Assam government announced ₹25,000 financial help for around 350 families affected by the incident. Meanwhile, the Assam Pollution Control Board said that the air quality in the area is still safe, based on national pollution standards.
