Tension surfaced at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in Delhi on Monday after a section of students raised controversial slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah within the campus. The incident followed the Supreme Court’s decision to reject bail pleas filed by activists and former JNU students Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam in the 2020 Delhi riots case.

As per reports, the sloganeering took place late Monday night near Sabarmati Hostel during a campus event known as “Godzilla Dhaba.” The gathering was organised to mark the anniversary of the January 5, 2020 violence at JNU. During the event, some students expressed their protest against the apex court’s refusal to grant bail to Khalid and Imam.

A brief video clip of the incident, approximately 35 seconds long, has been widely circulated on social media platforms. The footage shows students chanting slogans directed at the Prime Minister and the Home Minister. The video’s circulation has drawn sharp reactions from political leaders and various student bodies.

Delhi Police officials said they have taken note of the incident but clarified that no official complaint has been lodged so far. They added that relevant details are being gathered and a preliminary inquiry has been initiated.

According to sources, JNU Students’ Union Joint Secretary Danish Ali and Secretary Sunil were present at the location when the slogans were raised. It has also been claimed that students linked to Left-leaning organisations participated in the gathering.

Defending the protest, JNU Students’ Union president Aditi Mishra said students observe the January 5 anniversary every year to denounce the violence that occurred on campus in 2020. Speaking to news agency PTI, she stated that the slogans were ideological in nature and were not aimed at any individual personally. The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), however, strongly criticised the sloganeering. A student associated with the organisation condemned the incident and demanded strict action against those involved.
