Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Dehradun on Thursday to review the situation caused by recent floods and heavy rains in Uttarakhand. During his visit, he held a meeting with officials to assess the damage and also interacted with families affected by the disaster.
The Prime Minister announced a financial package of ₹1,200 crore to provide relief and support recovery efforts in the flood-affected areas. He also declared an ex gratia of ₹2 lakh for the families of those who lost their lives and ₹50,000 for those who were injured. In addition, he announced special support for children who lost their parents in the tragedy under the PM CARES for Children scheme.
PM Modi also met teams from the NDRF, SDRF, and Aapda Mitra volunteers, praising their hard work and dedication in carrying out rescue and relief operations. He assured the people of Uttarakhand that the central government would provide full support in rebuilding damaged infrastructure and restoring normal life in the affected regions.
Due to adverse weather conditions, the Prime Minister was unable to conduct an aerial survey of the worst-affected areas. Uttarakhand has been severely impacted by torrential rains, which triggered flash floods and landslides. Major rivers, including the Ganga, Alaknanda, and Mandakini, were reported to be flowing at or above the danger mark. So far, the disaster has claimed over 80 lives, and several people are still missing.
The heavy rainfall also damaged important infrastructure. In Chamoli district, a motorable bridge on the Jyotirmath-Malari highway near Tamak was washed away after the Tamak stream, swollen by rainfall, surged dangerously. Another crucial bridge that connects India with China was also washed away, cutting off access to several villages.
The state continues to battle the impact of incessant rains as rescue teams work around the clock to save lives and restore connectivity.
