The Railway Police have arrested a man for stealing mobile phones, purses, and other valuables from unsuspecting passengers while pretending to sleep. The suspect, Sufiyan, was apprehended by the Government Railway Police (GRP) Charbagh after a special operation aimed at curbing theft, robbery, and drug smuggling at railway stations and aboard trains. Authorities found him with three stolen mobile phones, valued at approximately Rs 45,000.
During questioning, Sufiyan admitted to his unusual method of stealing. He would board trains, sit or lie near passengers, and feign sleep. Once his targets fell asleep, he would quietly steal their belongings, including mobile phones and purses. He revealed that he had stolen one of the phones about nine months ago from a moving train at Charbagh railway station, which was travelling on the Delhi to Chhapra route. He had planned to sell the stolen phone in Charbagh.
Sufiyan also confessed to stealing another phone about eight months ago from the Amarnath Superfast Express (15654), which was headed to Moradabad. Recently short on money, he had returned to sell both of the stolen phones. Additionally, he admitted to taking a third phone two months ago from the 12391 Shramjeevi Express, which was travelling towards Moradabad.
The GRP had been searching for Sufiyan for some time before finally catching him. Multiple cases have been filed against him, highlighting his criminal activities. Indian Railways continues to prioritize passenger safety through special campaigns, with the GRP and Railway Protection Force (RPF) working together to ensure a secure travel experience for all.
