Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday announced that the government is planning to open India’s nuclear sector to private companies. He said this step will create new opportunities in areas like small modular reactors, advanced nuclear technology, and nuclear innovation. According to a PTI report, PM Modi said, “We will open up the nuclear sector to the private sector soon,” adding that this move will help strengthen India’s clean energy future.
PM Modi shared these updates while speaking at the inauguration of Skyroot Aerospace’s Infinity Campus, a major space startup facility. He said that India’s progress in the space sector is a powerful example of how determination can overcome limited resources. He recalled that in the early years, rocket parts were carried on bicycles due to a lack of infrastructure. But today, India has grown to build some of the world’s most reliable launch vehicles. He said this journey shows that “the height of our dreams is not decided by resources, but by our determination.”

The Prime Minister also highlighted the government’s efforts to support private participation in the space sector. He explained that the government opened the space industry for private innovation, introduced a new space policy, and encouraged collaboration between startups, industries, and research organisations.
He said the creation of IN-SPACe (Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre) has helped startups access ISRO’s facilities, technology, and expertise. PM Modi praised ISRO for its decades of contribution, saying that ISRO has given “new wings” to India’s space journey. He said that India has earned global recognition for its credibility, capability, and cost-effective space missions.
He added that the space sector is expanding rapidly, and India must stay ahead by promoting an ecosystem driven by innovation, cooperation, and private participation. By opening the nuclear sector to private companies, similar to how the space sector was opened, the government aims to boost innovation, increase energy capacity, and make India a strong global player in next-generation nuclear technology.
