An Indian Foreign Service officer, Jitendra Rawat, died by suicide in Delhi’s Chanakyapuri area on Friday morning. According to police sources, he jumped off the roof of his government-allotted home at around 6 am. His residence was in a colony meant for officers of the Ministry of External Affairs.
The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed his death and requested privacy for the family. In a statement, the ministry said, "An officer of the Ministry of External Affairs passed away in the morning of March 7 in New Delhi. The Ministry is providing all possible assistance to the family and is in touch with Delhi Police."
The statement further added, "The ministry stands with the family in this hour of grief and difficulty. Further details are not being released, bearing in mind the need to respect the family's privacy in this time of bereavement."
Sources revealed that Mr. Rawat was suffering from depression and was undergoing treatment. He lived on the first floor with his mother, who was at home at the time of his death. His wife and two children live in Dehradun.
Police sources told PTI that Mr. Rawat was between 35 and 40 years old. The police have started an investigation into the incident.
