A sudden cloudburst struck Uttarakhand’s capital, Dehradun, on Monday night, following hours of heavy rainfall. The downpour submerged several homes in Tapovan and led to severe waterlogging in Sahastradhara and the IT Park area. Officials confirmed that two people are missing after the incident.

The cloudburst swelled the Karligaad rivulet, causing massive flooding in nearby areas. The force of the water led to the collapse of a key bridge and damaged properties along the riverbanks. Authorities immediately shifted local residents to safer places.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami shared an update on X (formerly Twitter), saying some shops were damaged due to the heavy rain in Sahastradhara. He assured that he is in constant touch with the district administration and is personally monitoring the situation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Mr Dhami over the phone and promised full support from the Centre. He said the Union government “stands firmly with Uttarakhand in this hour of disaster.”

Home Minister Amit Shah also discussed the situation with the Chief Minister and assured that the Centre would extend all possible assistance for relief and rescue efforts.

In response, Mr Dhami expressed his gratitude, saying, “With the guidance and cooperation of the Prime Minister and the Home Minister, relief work will be conducted more rapidly in the state.”

District Magistrate Savin Bansal, Sub-Divisional Magistrate Kumkum Joshi, and other senior officials rushed to the site late at night to supervise operations. Mr Bansal also instructed rescue teams to intensify the search for the two missing persons.

Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and Public Works Department (PWD) are working at the spot with bulldozers to clear debris and restore access.

As a precaution, the District Magistrate ordered the closure of all schools from Class 1 to 12 in Dehradun.

Previous cloudburst incidents

Uttarakhand has faced repeated cloudburst events this monsoon. In August, two people went missing in Mopata village of Chamoli district after a cloudburst damaged homes and buried nearly 20 livestock.

On September 11, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Dehradun to review the flood situation and chaired a high-level meeting to assess relief measures.
