Google will open its first artificial intelligence hub in India in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, marking the company’s largest AI investment outside the United States. The tech giant plans to invest $15 billion over the next five years to build a massive data centre and AI campus.

Speaking about the project, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said he discussed the plan with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He described the hub as a combination of gigawatt-scale computing power, a new international subsea gateway, and large-scale energy infrastructure.

Pichai added on X, “Through it we will bring our industry-leading technology to enterprises and users in India, accelerating AI innovation and driving growth across the country.”

The hub will be developed in partnership with the Adani Group and represents Google’s largest-ever investment in India.

Google said the initiative aligns with the Indian government’s Viksit Bharat 2047 vision to expand AI-driven services. The company also highlighted that the project will create significant economic and societal opportunities for both India and the US while advancing AI capabilities.

At the formal signing event in Delhi, Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian called the hub a “landmark investment in India's digital future.” He said, “By delivering industry-leading AI infrastructure at scale, we are enabling businesses to innovate faster and creating meaningful opportunities for inclusive growth. This partnership reflects our shared commitment to the Indian and US governments to harness AI responsibly and drive transformative impact for society.”

The signing ceremony was attended by Union Ministers Nirmala Sitharaman and Ashwini Vaishnaw, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, and state IT Minister Nara Lokesh.

Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said, “This digital infrastructure will go a long way in meeting goals of our India AI vision. AI services are emerging as a totally new category in our digital economy, and we look forward to this new facility being used for developing our youth for AI services.”

CM N Chandrababu Naidu called the project a “new chapter” in India’s digital transformation and added, “We are proud to host India's first truly gigawatt-scale data centre and Google's first AI hub in India, which is a testament to our shared commitment to innovation, AI adoption, and long-term support for businesses and startups in the state.”

The announcement comes as tech giants like Microsoft and Amazon are also investing heavily in data centre infrastructure in India, which is expected to have over 900 million internet users by the end of the year. Google’s new hub is set to strengthen the country’s AI ecosystem and support the growing demand for AI services nationwide.
