A viral fake news post is circulating on the social media platform X, falsely claiming that Indian Army Colonel Sofiya Qureshi and her family were attacked in Gokak taluk, Belagavi district. The post, shared by a user named Anees Uddin, stated that Colonel Qureshi and her son were assaulted, their home was set on fire, and hate slogans were raised against Muslims. It also wrongly accused the RSS of leading the attack.
Belagavi’s Superintendent of Police, Dr. Bhimashankar Guled, has firmly dismissed the claims, confirming that they are entirely fabricated. Additional SP SN Shruti added, “This is fake news. The individuals behind this post are from outside the country, and we are working to trace them. Security has been provided to the family, and an investigation is ongoing.”
The post also falsely alleged that Colonel Qureshi was on an RSS hit list and that her family had been moved to Delhi for protection due to escalating threats. A separate post from @BattlesInsight shared similar claims, stating that Colonel Qureshi’s home was attacked by RSS extremists, her son was beaten, and her house was torched.
In response, authorities have increased security at the residence of Colonel Qureshi’s father-in-law, Gausasab Bagewadi, in Konnur village. Gokak Circle Police Inspector Suresh RB visited the site to evaluate the situation. Officials have advised the family to limit public interactions while the investigation continues.
Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, a senior officer in the Indian Army’s Corps of Signals, became widely recognised during Operation Sindoor, India’s response to the Pahalgam terror attack. She played a pivotal role in representing the Army during official briefings alongside Wing Commander Vyomika Singh and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri. This moment marked a historic achievement as two women officers led India’s military response.
Colonel Qureshi, married to Colonel Tajuddin Bagewadi, has a supportive family in Konnur village. Her father-in-law, Gausasab Bagewadi, expressed his pride, saying, “We were proud to see her confidently explain the operation on TV.”
