Delhi is taking a big step towards a greener and cleaner future. The city is building India’s first e-waste eco-park in Holambi Kalan. This special park will help recycle electronic waste in a safe and scientific way. It will also create jobs and support the environment.
The project is spread over 11.4 acres of land. The park will be able to handle up to 51,000 metric tonnes of e-waste every year. It will cover all 106 types of waste listed in the E-Waste Management Rules, 2022.
The Delhi government is investing Rs 150 crore to build the park and will spend more than Rs 325 crore to run it. Officials believe the park will earn around Rs 350 crore in revenue. The aim is to make Delhi a model city for handling e-waste properly.
“Every resource counts, every worker matters”
Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said this park is more than just a place to manage waste. “This isn't just about managing waste; it's a testament to Delhi's dedication to a circular economy where every resource counts and every worker matters,” he said.
He also added, “The days of careless dumping are behind us. We're focused on making Delhi ready for the future industrially, environmentally, and socially.”
To make sure the park uses the best technology, the Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (DSIIDC) will invite top green technology companies from around the world. A global tender will be issued soon.
The Eco Park will be built under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, where private companies will help design, build, finance, and run the park for 15 years. The full construction is expected to be completed within 18 months.
Once finished, the park will manage about 25% of Delhi’s total e-waste. It will also act as an example for other cities across India.
India’s e-waste crisis and green job opportunities
India is the third-largest country in the world for producing e-waste. Each year, it creates over 1.6 million metric tonnes of electronic waste. Delhi alone is responsible for 9.5% of that amount.
Right now, only 17.4% of global e-waste is recycled in a proper scientific way. This means a lot of useful materials like copper, lithium, and rare earth metals are being wasted.
Delhi’s Eco Park will not only help recover these materials but will also support local workers. Many people who work in waste recycling now do it in unsafe conditions. This park will help organise their work, offer training, and create thousands of green jobs.
In total, four such eco-parks are planned across India, but Delhi’s is the first to begin work. The project already has land and funds secured.
With this new park, Delhi is showing the way to turn a big problem into a big solution—creating jobs, saving resources, and protecting the environment all at once.
