Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday announced that a special parade, similar to the Republic Day parade, will now be held every year on October 31. The day marks the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, India’s first Deputy Prime Minister, who is remembered as the “Iron Man of India.” The announcement came during celebrations of Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day), held to honour Patel’s key role in uniting India after independence.

Speaking at the event, Shah said, “We all know that Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel played a major role in uniting India post-independence… From this year onward, a grand parade will be organised on every 31st October.”

He shared that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the first parade at 7:55 AM in Ekta Nagar, Gujarat, where units from Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and state police will take part.

Shah also accused the Congress of not giving Sardar Patel due respect in the years after independence.
He said, “There is a 41-year delay in awarding the Bharat Ratna to a great personality like Sardar Patel, solely because of the Congress party’s distinct lack of respect for him.”

The Home Minister went on to praise Prime Minister Modi for building the Statue of Unity and the Sardar Patel Memorial, calling it “a magnificent monument that has become famous worldwide.”

Shah announced that Ekta Nagar will host a two-week cultural celebration from November 1 to 15. It will include Bharat Parv, a festival showcasing food stalls, cultural performances, and an event to mark Birsa Munda Jayanti.

The “Run for Unity” campaign will also be expanded across the country to ensure participation from schools, universities, districts, and police forces.

Grand parade participation

According to officials, 16 contingents, including ITBP, BSF, NCC, CISF, and CRPF, will take part in the parade. Shaurya Chakra awardees, other medal winners, and school bands will also join the celebration, highlighting India’s spirit of unity and strength.
