Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has reacted to the controversy surrounding YouTuber Ranveer Allahabadia, also known as BeerBiceps, over his remarks on a roast show. While he admitted he hadn’t watched the video, he stated that anyone crossing the limits of decency would face action.
Fadnavis said, "I've heard about the issue, though I haven’t seen the video myself. From what I understand, the content was highly inappropriate, which is not acceptable. While everyone has the right to free speech, that right shouldn't come at the cost of others' dignity. There are boundaries, and if anyone crosses them, action will be taken."
Meanwhile, two Mumbai lawyers have filed a police complaint against Allahabadia, accusing him of making vulgar comments.
Lawyers Ashish Rai and Pankaj Mishra have filed a complaint with Mumbai Police Commissioner Vivek Phalsankar and the state Women's Commission, demanding an FIR against Ranveer Allahabadia and other comedians. They claim that remarks made on the 'India's Got Latent' show were disrespectful towards women and should lead to legal action. The complaint also names comedians Samay Raina and Apoorva Makhija, among others.
A viral clip from the show features Ranveer Allahabadia asking a contestant an offensive question about their parents, sparking widespread backlash.
The complaint alleges that the comedians made objectionable remarks about women's bodies and were promoting vulgar thoughts among children. The lawyers claim these statements were made only for monetary gain.
They have urged authorities to shut down the show and register a case against the comedians and organizers.
Earlier, Allahabadia’s remarks led to massive social media outrage, with many criticizing such shows for promoting vulgarity under the guise of comedy.
Journalist and lyricist Neelesh Misra was among those who condemned the remarks. Sharing a clip of Ranveer Allahabadia's comment, he criticized the platform's creators for having "zero sense of responsibility."
"I'm not surprised that people at the desk and many in the audience laughed and celebrated this. The audience normalised and encouraged such behavior," Misra wrote on X.
He further pointed out that decency is not rewarded in India, as creators stoop lower for views and revenue. "These people can say anything in the name of freedom of speech and get away with it," he added.
Congress leader Supriya Shrinate also slammed the content, calling it perverse, not creative. "We can't normalise such behavior as cool. The fact that it got loud applause should worry us all," she said.
