Acupuncture is often seen as a safe and gentle method to ease pain and boost wellness. But for one man in China, this treatment almost became deadly after it was done by someone who had no medical training.

As reported by the South China Morning Post (SCMP), the man, identified only by his surname Gao, had a fibroma, a non-cancerous lump, under his shoulder blade. His wife, Zhang, found a "doctor" through a friend in Henan province to treat the lump. Unfortunately, the man was not a real doctor.

Instead of diagnosing the fibroma correctly, the unqualified man said Gao had an “air bump” on his back and claimed he could fix it using acupuncture. He told the couple it would take just a few sessions to treat the issue.

During the first session, Gao was given two acupuncture needles, and nothing seemed unusual. But the second time, the so-called doctor used ten needles. Gao later said that he began sweating a lot and felt very sick.

“I was soaking wet and even my shoes were filled with sweat,” Gao said. “I also lost consciousness,” he added.

Zhang quickly took her husband to the hospital, where doctors discovered that his lungs had been punctured. He was rushed into emergency surgery. According to reports, Gao is now slowly recovering.

This terrifying experience shows how dangerous it can be to receive medical treatments from someone without proper qualifications. Always check that a healthcare provider is licensed before beginning any treatment.
