A terrible incident of ragging has surfaced at a government nursing college in Kerala, where junior students were supposedly tortured physically and emotionally for months. Five senior students have been detained against a police complaint for their involvement in the horrible abuse.
Three first-year students from Thiruvananthapuram described their terrible experience in a formal complaint to the Kottayam Gandhinagar police at the Government Nursing College in Kottayam. According to the victims, the abuse began in November 2024 and lasted for almost three months.
The police say the charged third-year students subjected their juniors to intense abuse and stripping naked. Reportedly the seniors strung weights from their genitals, stabbed them with piercing tools—such as geometry compasses—and caused numerous wounds.
The maltreatment exceeded mere violent attacks. The victims said their pains were consciously made worse with products that flamed and burned. The seniors spread the same ointment into their mouths to heighten their pain and screaming.
To silence their victims, the accused filmed the abuse and threatened the juniors with severe consequences, including ruining their academic careers, if they dared to report the incidents. The psychological trauma left the victims in a state of deep distress.
Officials acted promptly on getting the complaint. Five students were expelled from college and legal action was initiated under the Anti-Ragging Act. Strict action is promised by the cops and they stress that such events will not be acceptable.
Additionally, the complaint charges that the seniors regularly demanded funds from juniors on Sundays to buy alcohol. Those who rejected suffered physical injury. Finding the teasing too much to bear, one student told his father, who then encouraged him to report it to the police.
Currently, all five arrested are in police custody and are presumed to be presented before a magistrate by Wednesday afternoon.
The incident came to light just weeks apart from the terrible suicide of a Kochi high school student. According to his mother, continuous bullying by classmates drove him to suicide.
