A 23-year-old woman named Faseela was found hanging at her husband’s home in Vellangular, Thrissur district, Kerala, on July 29. She was pregnant at the time. The police have arrested her husband, Naufal, and her mother-in-law, Ramla. Both have been placed in judicial custody.

The arrests were made following a complaint from Faseela’s family, who accused Naufal and Ramla of abusing her. Police said they received WhatsApp chats in which Faseela had written about repeated violence. In the messages to her mother, she mentioned that her husband had kicked her in the stomach multiple times and had even broken her hand. She also said her mother-in-law often verbally abused her.

One of her final messages read: “I am going to die, or they will kill me.”

Police have registered a case under abetment to suicide and other relevant charges. After a post-mortem at the Government Medical College in Thrissur, her body was handed over to her family. Faseela is survived by her young son.

Another painful incident reported is of a woman from Kollam, Athulya (29), who was found dead in her apartment in the United Arab Emirates on July 21. Her family believes she was murdered by her husband, and not a case of suicide.

They said Athulya had been physically and mentally abused since her marriage in 2014 over dowry demands. To support their claims, they released photos and videos that showed injuries on her body.

In his statement, Athulya’s husband reportedly admitted to hitting her, but called it “very normal.” Kollam police have now registered a murder case against him.

Just a few weeks earlier, 32-year-old Vipanchika Maniyan and her one-and-a-half-year-old daughter were found dead in their flat in Sharjah on July 8. A suicide note left behind revealed years of domestic violence and dowry harassment.

In her handwritten note, Vipanchika wrote that she had asked for help many times, but no one came to her rescue. She described how she had been abused both physically and emotionally.

She wrote: “He used to watch certain videos and used to demand that I do those in bed. I was tortured and beaten up like a dog. I can’t take it anymore. Don’t spare them.”

Police in Kerala have filed a case against her husband Nidheesh, his sister, and his father for abetment to suicide and other dowry-related charges.
