A newly purchased Mahindra Thar fell from the first floor of a showroom in Preet Vihar on Monday evening. The accident happened after the owner accidentally pressed the accelerator while performing a traditional ritual, police said.

The incident occurred around 5 pm when Pradeep and his wife, Maani Pawar, residents of Indirapuram in Ghaziabad, visited the Mahindra showroom at Nirman Vihar to take delivery of their new Thar. As part of the ritual, Maani placed lemons under the car’s tyres before driving it forward. However, she accidentally pressed the accelerator instead of gently moving the car, causing it to lurch forward uncontrollably.

The vehicle broke through the showroom’s glass wall and fell from the first floor onto the road below. The accident left shattered glass everywhere and the SUV overturned on the street. At the time, Maani, her husband Pradeep, and a showroom salesman named Vikas were inside the vehicle. Vikas was sitting in the passenger seat, explaining the car’s features, when the incident occurred.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Abhishek Dhania said the medico-legal case (MLC) of Maani Pawar was received from Malik Hospital in Nirman Vihar. On inquiry, the police confirmed that the Thar was being delivered to the couple when it darted off, broke through the glass wall, and fell to the ground.

Fortunately, no one was seriously injured. Maani sustained some injuries and was admitted to the hospital, but there have been no complaints filed by either the family or the showroom management.

A video of the incident quickly went viral on social media. It shows the overturned SUV lying on the road and the showroom’s gaping first-floor wall where the glass had shattered. The footage captured the attention of netizens, highlighting the unusual accident during a traditional delivery ritual.
