A wedding in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, turned into a big mess when the groom arrived drunk and mistakenly garlanded the bride's best friend instead of the bride. The bride, Radha Devi, 21, was so upset that she slapped the groom, called off the wedding, and left. This all happened on Saturday.
The trouble started when the groom, Ravindra Kumar, 26, came late to the wedding with his procession. According to the bride's family, the groom's family also asked for more dowry. The bride's father had already given Rs 2.5 lakh during the pre-wedding rituals and another Rs 2 lakh on the wedding day, but it wasn’t enough for the groom's family.
In another version of the story, it is said that Ravindra Kumar wanted to marry someone of his own choice. He allegedly came drunk to the wedding and behaved badly with the bride's family and guests.
By the time it was time to exchange garlands, he had been drinking with his friends. According to the FIR, instead of garlanding the bride, he accidentally put it on her best friend who was standing next to her. Radha Devi, the bride, got angry, slapped the groom, and walked away.
A fight broke out between the two families, with both sides throwing chairs at each other. The police eventually arrived and took control of the situation. The groom and his wedding procession were sent back. The police detained the groom and his friends and filed a case for insulting the bride’s family and "disturbing the peace."A case was also filed against the groom for demanding dowry.
It was also alleged that the groom's friends had bought illegal liquor and gave it to him. One man has been arrested for selling liquor.
