A woman named Destinee has gone viral on social media for her unusual decision to give up traditional housing due to high rent costs. Instead of paying $2,000 per month for rent and other expenses, she chose to live on the streets.
Destinee shared her journey on TikTok and Instagram, explaining why she made this bold choice. Her video, posted on February 23, 2025, has already gained over 680,000 views. People have reacted in different ways—some support her decision, while others question why she would choose this lifestyle.
From living in a car to finding shelter at work
At first, Destinee tried to live in her car, just like many others looking for a cheaper alternative. However, things did not go as planned. Her car soon broke down, making it impossible to live there. “I spent countless nights in that car without air or heat," she shared in her video.
With no other place to go, she decided to talk to her employer about her situation. Instead of being fired or asked to leave, she received understanding and support. Now, Destinee sleeps in a small room at her workplace. The room has a mini fridge, a washbasin, a lamp, and a recliner where she rests at night.
To maintain hygiene, she goes to a gym to shower and get ready for the day. She also rents a storage unit for $75 per month to keep her belongings safe.
Public reactions: Support and criticism
Destinee’s story has divided opinions on social media. Some people admire her creative way of avoiding high rent, while others believe having a stable home is worth the cost.
One user commented, “I’m not mad at her, but I am mad that rent is so high that people have to come up with creative ways just to have affordable shelter. This country is so stressful."
Another person disagreed, saying, “My peace and stability would be worth the $1,980, but that’s just me."
Some were surprised at how different homelessness looks today. A comment read, “Hair done, nails done, AirPods, lighting, and phone to record content! Homeless looks different in 2025."
Others praised her for finding a way to survive. One supporter wrote, “I love what you’ve done and how you made this work!! Survival skills on.”
Destinee also clarified that she does not struggle to find food. “When I tell people I am homeless, they think I dig in dumpsters to get food, but that’s not true. I chose to be homeless because I was tired of paying bills. Now I live rent-free and eat ribs," she explained.
To ensure she gets proper meals, Destinee also uses a meal prep service at work.
Her video has sparked a bigger conversation about rising rent prices and how people are being forced to find unconventional ways to live. While some admire her courage, others believe having a stable home is important for peace of mind.
