Iran, known for supporting powerful groups across the Middle East, is now facing Israeli attacks on its land, but this time, its usual allies are mostly silent. Groups like Hezbollah, Hamas, the Houthis, and Iraqi militias have long stood by Iran, helping to spread its influence and fight its enemies. But during this current crisis, these groups have not responded strongly, raising the question: Is Iran fighting this battle alone? Here is the look of its allies-
Hezbollah: Iran’s strongest partner, has not launched any major attacks. The group has been weakened by Israeli strikes since 2023. Its former leader Hassan Nasrallah was killed, and the new leader, Naim Qassem, is acting more like a Lebanese politician than an Iranian ally.
Hamas, the Palestinian group in Gaza, has been badly hurt after nearly two years of war with Israel. Much of Gaza is destroyed, and many top leaders are dead. Iran supported Hamas politically after the October 7, 2023 attacks, but military help was limited.
In Iraq, Iran-backed militias used to attack US forces and protect Iranian interests. But now, they are mostly silent. Iraq’s Prime Minister is also urging them to stay out of the conflict.
The Houthis in Yemen were active recently but slowed down after US airstrikes destroyed their missile systems.
Outside the region, Iran is close to Russia, China, and North Korea, but none have stepped in to help directly. These countries form what experts call the "Quartet of Chaos."
What’s India’s stand
Meanwhile, India has friendly ties with both Israel and Iran. In 2024, India signed a deal to run Iran’s Chabahar Port, showing it wants to stay neutral and focus on development.
