Badar Khan Suri, an Indian student at Georgetown University in Washington, has been detained by the US government. According to Fox News, officials say he has links to the Palestinian militant group Hamas and was spreading its messages on social media. The Department of Homeland Security confirmed the arrest on Thursday.

The Trump administration wants to deport Badar Khan Suri, calling him a threat to US foreign policy, his lawyer said. Suri has been detained in Alexandria, Louisiana, awaiting his immigration court hearing. He was arrested by federal agents outside his home in Rosslyn, Virginia, on Monday night.

The White House deputy chief of staff, Stephen Miller, shared a statement about the case, but it did not provide evidence for the claims against Suri. Secretary of State Marco Rubio labelled Suri as "deportable" and accused him of promoting "antisemitism" on social media.

Georgetown University stated that it has not received any explanation for Suri's detention and is unaware of any illegal activities linked to him.

About Badar Khan Suri

Badar Khan Suri, a student visa holder in the US, is married to Mapheze Saleh, a US citizen. He works as a postdoctoral fellow at Georgetown University's Alwaleed Bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding, which operates under the School of Foreign Service.

According to Georgetown University's website, Mapheze Saleh is from Gaza and has written for Al Jazeera, a Qatari government-funded broadcaster, as well as Palestinian media outlets. She has also worked with the foreign affairs ministry in Gaza.

Suri holds a PhD in peace and conflict studies from an Indian university and has been teaching a class this semester on "Majoritarianism and Minority Rights in South Asia."

Trump's crackdown on 'Antisemitism'

The Trump administration has labelled pro-Palestinian protesters as "antisemitic", arguing that they reject any criticism of Israel's military actions in Gaza and the West Bank.

The White House is reviewing university funding, alleging that some institutions have not done enough to protect Jewish students from harassment by anti-war protesters.

Columbia University, UC Berkeley, the University of Minnesota, Northwestern University, and Portland State University are among the universities under investigation.

Earlier this month, the Trump administration arrested Columbia University student Mahmoud Khalil over his participation in pro-Palestinian protests and sought to deport him. Khalil is now fighting his detention in court.

Trump has accused Khalil of supporting Hamas, but his lawyers deny any links to the group, which the US considers a "foreign terrorist organization."
