Just hours after slapping a 25% tariff on Indian goods, former U.S. President Donald Trump made another big announcement, this time involving Pakistan. He said that the U.S. and Pakistan have agreed to work together to develop Pakistan’s oil reserves. Trump also hinted that maybe, one day, Pakistan might sell that oil to India.

In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump wrote, “We’ve just made a deal with Pakistan to help develop their large oil reserves. We’re choosing an American oil company to lead this project. Who knows — maybe they’ll be selling oil to India someday.”

This came right after Trump’s tough comments about India. He said India puts very high taxes (tariffs) on American goods and still relies heavily on buying oil and weapons from Russia, something the U.S. doesn’t support because of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. As a result, Trump announced a 25% tariff on Indian exports to the U.S., starting August 1, along with an additional penalty.

India currently buys most of its oil from Russia, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, but also imports some from the U.S. Trump’s statement about Pakistan came as a surprise, especially because Pakistan itself doesn’t produce much oil and imports a lot of its energy too.

At the same time, tensions between India and Pakistan remain high after a recent terror attack in Pahalgam, blamed on Pakistan-based groups. Trump has earlier claimed he helped calm the situation between the two nations, a claim India has denied. Trump also mentioned he was in talks with many countries to strike new trade deals and reduce U.S. trade deficits. He even said South Korea is negotiating to lower its tariffs with the U.S., and other countries are doing the same.

India and the U.S. are currently trying to work out a trade deal, but there’s no agreement yet. Negotiators might meet again in August, but a final deal may not come before September or even October. The 25% tariff is seen as a big blow for Indian exporters, but Indian officials are still hoping for a fair deal soon.
