U.S. President Donald Trump has made strong remarks against India and Russia, saying that both countries could “take their dead economies down together.” He posted this message on his social media platform, Truth Social, expressing frustration over India's trade policies and its close relationship with Russia.
Trump claimed that the U.S. has done very little business with India because of what he called “very high tariffs” — taxes that India puts on imported goods. He also accused India of imposing non-monetary trade barriers, which make it more difficult for American companies to do business in the country.
He added that India buys a lot of its military equipment and oil from Russia, even while the world is asking Russia to stop its war in Ukraine. As a result, Trump announced that India will face a 25% tariff on all its exports to the U.S. starting August 1, along with an additional penalty. These new trade penalties are expected to create concern among Indian exporters, especially as Trump had earlier claimed he was trying to get India to reduce tariffs. But since no trade deal was reached, he is now going ahead with the new duties.
Meanwhile, Trump also attacked Dmitry Medvedev, former President of Russia, telling him to “watch his words” after Medvedev warned that Trump’s tough talk could lead to war, not just with Ukraine, but with the U.S. itself.
India, on the other hand, responded calmly, saying it will always prioritise the country’s national interest. In a statement, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry said the government is committed to protecting the welfare of farmers, small businesses, and entrepreneurs, and will take every necessary step in any trade agreement to keep the country's best interests in mind.
