US President Donald Trump has said that the United States will impose an additional 10% tariff on any country that supports what he called the “anti-American policies of BRICS.” His statement, made on Truth Social on Sunday night (July 6), has raised new concerns about global trade.

"Any country aligning itself with the anti-American policies of BRICS will be charged an ADDITIONAL 10% tariff," Trump wrote. "There will be no exceptions to this policy."

Trump’s warning comes just before the US government is expected to send tariff letters to several countries. The current 90-day pause on new trade duties is set to end on Wednesday. Trump said in another post that those letters would begin going out from Monday noon, Washington time.

What happened at the BRICS meeting?

BRICS is a group of countries that includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Over the weekend, BRICS leaders met and criticised the US and Israel for their actions in Iran and Gaza. They also asked Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to remove Israeli troops from Gaza and called for a peaceful solution to Middle East conflicts.

Leaders like Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi were present at the meeting.

Trump did not clearly explain which BRICS policies he considers “anti-American” or when the new tariffs would be applied. In the past, he has warned of a 100% tariff if BRICS countries stop using the US dollar in trade. This warning has encouraged some BRICS members to look for new local payment systems to support trade among themselves.

China calls for peaceful reforms

At the summit, Chinese Premier Li said that BRICS nations should play a bigger role in improving global systems. "Today's world is more turbulent, with unilateralism and protectionism on the rise," he said. "China is willing to work with BRICS countries to promote global governance in a more just, reasonable, efficient, and orderly direction."

China’s foreign ministry has not yet responded to Trump’s statement.
