Right-wing activist and Trump ally Charlie Kirk was reportedly killed, with Tyler Robinson allegedly admitting to the killing at Utah University last week. According to court documents, a series of messages between Robinson, his transgender parents, and his roommate revealed details about the rifle he used and provided insights into his motive.

About the incident

Charlie Kirk, 31, founder of Turning Point USA, was giving a speech as part of his “American Comeback Tour” when he was shot in the neck last week at Utah University. Court documents reveal that 22-year-old Tyler Robinson  planned the killing for over a week and left a handwritten note detailing his intentions. Police said Robinson’s roommate provided text messages that confirmed the suspect’s actions and motives. The roommate was identified in court as a biological male who was in a romantic relationship with Robinson.

Robinson appeared virtually for his first court hearing, where he was formally charged with seven counts. Prosecutors stated they will seek the death penalty, citing his handwritten note and messages in which he appeared to confess.

Confession

Less than three hours after the shooting, Robinson sent messages to his partner, Lance Twiggs, directing them to check under his computer keyboard. Twiggs found a note that said: “I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk, and I’m going to take it.” Initially, Twiggs thought it might be a prank, but Robinson admitted in texts that he had carried out the attack. He explained his motive, saying he “hadhad enough of his hatred” and believed some hate “can’t be negotiated out.”

Concerns about Grandfather’s rifle

Robinson reportedly used his grandfather’s scoped .30-06 hunting rifle for the attack and tried to hide it in nearby bushes. In texts, he expressed worry about what his father would say if the gun were lost. He never managed to retrieve the weapon because the police had already secured the area.

Prosecutors confirmed Twiggs has not been charged and is cooperating fully with authorities. One of Robinson’s last messages before surrendering read: “You are all I worry about, love.” Robinson was arrested roughly 33 hours after the shooting, according to FBI Director Kash Patel.

Reactions

President Donald Trump publicly supported calls for the death penalty for Robinson and attended Kirk’s funeral. Top officials in his administration have also criticised left-wing groups, with Trump blaming the “radical left” for the assassination.
