More than10 members of the Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) were killed in Lahore early Monday morning after paramilitary Rangers opened fire on protesters. The clashes occurred during an operation launched before morning prayers to disperse demonstrators who had gathered for a planned march toward Islamabad.
The violence also led to injuries among law enforcement personnel, with more than 50 policemen reportedly hurt in the confrontations. Tensions escalated further in Muridke as clashes spread between TLP supporters and security forces.
The unrest is linked to the group’s plan to hold an anti-Israel protest outside the US Embassy in Islamabad. On Sunday, officials from the Punjab government held discussions with TLP representatives to try to resolve the situation peacefully. A Punjab government official told PTI that talks were ongoing, involving Senator Rana Sanaullah, government adviser Hafiz Tahir Ashrafi, and Punjab Health Minister Khawaja Salman Rafique. The official said a breakthrough was expected soon.
Meanwhile, security remained extremely tight in Islamabad and Rawalpindi. Authorities have been on high alert for the past three days, taking strict measures to prevent protesters from reaching the capital. Major roads leading to Islamabad have been blocked, metro bus services suspended, and mobile internet access partially restricted to limit communication among demonstrators.
The TLP leadership claims that at least 24 of their supporters have been killed and more than 200 injured since a police operation began late Wednesday night. The group had mobilized to march toward Islamabad in protest against Israeli actions in Gaza. The confrontations disrupted normal life in Lahore, bringing parts of the city to a standstill.
Authorities are continuing efforts to manage the unrest and prevent further violence, while talks between the government and TLP representatives are ongoing. The situation remains tense as both sides attempt to reach a resolution before more casualties occur.
