U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday that Israel and Iran have agreed to stop fighting, possibly ending the 12-day war that forced millions to leave Tehran and raised fears of a bigger conflict. Over the weekend, Israel, with help from the US attacked Iran’s nuclear sites, claiming Iran was close to making a nuclear bomb
Trump posted on his social media platform, Truth Social, saying: "If everything goes as planned, I want to praise both Israel and Iran for their strength and smart decision to end what should now be called ‘THE 12 DAY WAR.’"
Israel has not officially responded yet. However, an Iranian official said Iran had agreed to stop fighting, but only if Israel also stopped attacking. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said early Tuesday that if Israel ends its “illegal attacks” by 4 a.m. Tehran time, Iran will also cease its response.
Ceasefire with Israel takes shape
Iran said its military operations against Israel continued until 4 a.m., the agreed time for a ceasefire. Foreign Minister Araqchi praised the armed forces and stated that the final decision to halt all actions would be made soon. No new Israeli attacks have been reported since then.
A senior U.S. official said President Trump brokered the deal in a call with Israeli PM Netanyahu. Israel agreed to stop if Iran held back. Trump also hinted both sides could finish ongoing missions before the ceasefire fully begins.
Iran denies having a nuclear weapons program, though its leader said no one could stop them if they wanted one. Israel is believed to have nuclear weapons but hasn’t confirmed it. Qatar’s PM also helped secure Iran’s agreement, and U.S. officials were in touch with Iran during talks.
Despite ceasefire talks, tensions remain. Israel issued two evacuation alerts in Tehran and sounded alarms in the Golan Heights. Trump downplayed Iran’s strike on a U.S. base and thanked Tehran for the warning. Iran’s response aimed to show strength without triggering war.
The U.S. and Israel bombed Iran’s nuclear sites over the weekend, leading many in Tehran to flee. Vice President Vance said Iran can no longer build a nuclear weapon. Israel also targeted key government sites, including Evin Prison, hinting at a broader strike on Iran’s leadership.
