An Australian boat builder has launched the world’s biggest battery-powered ship, named Hull 096. The 130-metre-long ferry was built by Incat, a company based in Tasmania.vThe ship was launched last Friday in Hobart and will be known as China Zorrilla once it starts operating. It is named after a famous actress from Uruguay.
The ferry can carry around 2,100 passengers and 225 vehicles. It will run between Montevideo (the capital of Uruguay), two other cities in Uruguay, and Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, according to The Guardian.
Although the inside of the ship is not finished yet, it will have a huge duty-free shopping area of 2,300 square metres, about the size of 100 average Australian homes.
Hull 096 is powered by over 250 tonnes of batteries, using an energy storage system (ESS) with a capacity of more than 40 megawatt-hours. This ESS is the largest ever installed on a ship, four times bigger than any previous system, and is connected to eight electric water jets. The batteries can power the ship for 90 minutes of travel.
Though the interior is still being completed, the ferry will include a 2,300-square-metre duty-free shopping area, making it the largest retail space on any ship in the world, according to Incat.
Once finished, Hull 096 will have the largest shopping area ever built on a ship, according to the company Incat. Incat also said that Hull 096 is not only the world’s biggest electric ship but also the largest electric vehicle ever built, measuring 130 metres in length.
Incat Chairman Robert Clifford said, “We’ve been building top-quality ships in Tasmania for over 40 years, and Hull 096 is the most challenging and important project we’ve ever worked on.” He added that the company plans to build more eco-friendly ships for customers both in Australia and around the world.
Incat CEO Stephen Casey said the ship proves that large, low-emission transport options are not only possible but already available.
Tasmania Premier Jeremy Rockliff, who attended the launch, said the project makes Tasmania a world leader in zero-emission technology thanks to this electric ship.
