A 26-year-old man from Haryana, India, was shot dead in California after he stopped another man from urinating in public. The victim, Kapil from Barah Kala village in Jind district, collapsed on the street after being shot and was later declared dead at a hospital.

“He simply asked a man not to urinate in the open, and for that, he was shot,” a grieving relative told reporters. Kapil’s family said he was their only heir and had been supporting them financially from abroad.

Kapil had gone to the US in 2022 through the illegal “Dunki” route, spending nearly ₹45 lakh (around $54,000) to make the journey. His family, who belong to a farming background, is now struggling to arrange funds to bring his body back to India.

Witnesses called police soon after the shooting, and Kapil was rushed to a nearby hospital, but doctors could not save him. Authorities in the US have not revealed the suspect’s name or confirmed any arrests in the case.
