OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, will open a corporate office in New Delhi by the end of 2025. The move highlights India’s growing importance as a hub for technology and artificial intelligence. The company, co-founded by Sam Altman, has already started hiring to build its local team. At present, it has only one employee in India, Pragya Misra, who leads public policy and partnerships.

“India has the talent, developer ecosystem and government support to become a global AI leader,” Altman said, adding that opening the first office is a step toward building AI “for India and with India.”

Why India?

India is ChatGPT’s biggest market outside the United States, with weekly active users growing four times in just the past year. The country also has the world’s largest student base on ChatGPT and ranks among the top five developer markets for OpenAI.
