Microsoft is rolling out a new automatic location detection feature for its Teams app, which will recognise when staff members are working from the office.
According to a Microsoft 365 roadmap post cited by TechRadar, the feature will use Wi-Fi connections to determine if an employee is on-site and then update their Teams location status automatically.
If a device connects to the organisation’s internal Wi-Fi network, Teams will automatically label the user’s location as that specific office building. This will help colleagues see whether a team member is working from home or in the office.
Microsoft says the goal is to make hybrid work smoother and more transparent, reducing confusion about where employees are working from. However, the move has raised some privacy concerns, as it could limit employees’ ability to work from private or less monitored spaces in the office.
The feature will be rolled out globally in December 2025 for Windows and macOS versions of Microsoft Teams.
The automatic location detection is part of a broader set of updates designed to enhance productivity and AI integration in Teams.
Recently, Microsoft added a “Save message” feature that lets users bookmark important chats or messages for easy access later.
An upcoming update will also allow users to customise keyboard shortcuts for frequent icons and actions, a feature aimed at making navigation faster for those who use Teams daily.
Microsoft is also making its Copilot AI assistant in Teams more powerful. During recorded meetings, Copilot will be able to analyse discussions, shared documents, and chat records to create instant summaries, insights, and answers to user queries.
For example, users will be able to ask questions such as, “What was the feedback given on each slide?” or “What were the best-selling products?” and receive quick, AI-generated answers.
Microsoft plans to make Copilot’s screen-context capability available globally by August 2026 across all major platforms, Android, iOS, macOS, Windows, and web.
