Hot Tub, a native porn app, has been launched for iPhones and iPads through AltStore, an alternative app store for iOS. The app is available only in the European market and has passed all approval requirements, including compliance with the Digital Markets Act (DMA). However, Apple strongly opposes this move, arguing that it could compromise user safety and security, especially for children. Despite Apple's concerns, Hot Tub is currently free to use and marks a significant step in the expansion of third-party app stores under the new regulations.

What is the Hot Tub app for iPhones?

Hot Tub is an adult content aggregator that allows iOS users to search and stream videos from popular adult websites like Pornhub, Xvideos, XNXX, and XHamster. While these websites have always been accessible through browsers, the app provides a more streamlined experience. Reports suggest that the Digital Markets Act (DMA) has enabled its listing on iPhones and iPads via alternative app stores in the EU.

Currently, Hot Tub is only available in Europe and is in its beta phase. According to a TechCrunch report, the app description states, "The app promises a private and secure way to browse adult content, without ads or tracking. An elegant, native porn app. Thoughtfully designed, ethically made, and free to use."

Hot Tub positions itself as a native alternative to adult websites, offering a seamless experience without ads, trackers, or intrusive pop-ups. It features built-in search, gesture controls, and customizable settings. Subscribers also get exclusive perks like advanced search options, content filtering, and access to categorised videos across multiple platforms.

The EU ended Apple's exclusive control over iPhone and iPad app stores last year, citing monopoly concerns. Now, alternative stores can approve apps that Apple usually bans, like those with adult content. While Apple still requires a basic review, it warns these stores may allow controversial apps.

AltStore says Hot Tub is the first adult app approved for iPhones under the new rules. Despite its content, it passed without issues since Apple must allow such apps under the Digital Markets Act (DMA).

Apple prioritizes user safety, but the EU’s Digital Markets Act now allows iPhone users to install apps from alternative stores.

AltStore Pal, one of the first alternative marketplaces, launched in April 2024. It has since expanded to include utilities and previously banned apps, such as game emulators. With the launch of the porn app Hot Tub, Apple has raised serious safety concerns.

In a statement reported by TechCrunch, Apple said such apps undermine user trust and would never be allowed on its App Store. "Contrary to the false statements made by the marketplace developer, we do not approve of this app. The European Commission requires us to allow its distribution through marketplace operators like AltStore and Epic, who may not share our concerns for user safety," Apple stated.
