Rohit Sharma has created another big moment in cricket. On Wednesday (October 29), the 38-year-old Indian star became the oldest cricketer to reach the No. 1 spot in the ICC ODI rankings. This is also the first time in his long career that he has held the top position in ODIs.
Rohit reached the milestone at 38 years and 182 days, taking the spot from Shubman Gill.
In the latest ranking update, Rohit moved up two places and now has 781 rating points.
Afghanistan’s Ibrahim Zadran is second with 764 points, while Shubman Gill is third with 745 points.
Rohit made his comeback to the Indian team after a seven-month break, playing a three-match ODI series against Australia. Even though India lost the series 1-2, Rohit was the highest run-scorer with 202 runs at an average of 101.00.
Rohit's scores in the series were:
8 in Perth
73 in Adelaide
121* in Sydney
His match-winning century in Sydney came along with a big partnership of 168 runs with Virat Kohli. Kohli scored 74 off 81* in that match, but could not score in the first two games. Because of that, Kohli has now moved to sixth position in the rankings with 725 points.
Gill had taken over as India’s ODI captain before the series, which led to talks about whether Rohit and Kohli will be part of the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa.
For now, neither the players nor the BCCI has said anything about their plans. The focus remains on current performances.
