Indian cricketer Shreyas Iyer has suffered a serious injury to his spleen after a blow to his rib cage during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on October 25. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed that he is currently stable and recovering under close medical supervision.
Iyer was injured while fielding and had to walk off the ground shortly after the incident. He was taken to a hospital for scans and evaluation.
According to the BCCI’s official update, “Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region while fielding during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on 25th October 2025. He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation. Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well.”
The board also stated that the BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is monitoring his progress. The Indian Team Doctor will remain in Sydney to oversee Iyer’s daily recovery.
A source close to the developments told PTI that Iyer suffered internal bleeding after returning to the dressing room, which made his condition more serious. “Shreyas has been in the ICU for the past couple of days. After the reports came in, internal bleeding was detected, and he had to be admitted immediately. He will remain under observation for anywhere between two to seven days, depending on recovery, as one needs to stop the spread of infection due to bleeding,” the source said.
The source added that prompt medical action by the team doctor and physio possibly prevented a worse outcome.
“The team doctor and physio didn't take any chances and took him to the hospital immediately. Things are stable now, but it could have been fatal. He’s a tough lad and should be fine soon. Since there has been internal bleeding, he will certainly need more time to recover, and at this point, it’s difficult to put a definite timeline on his return to competitive cricket,” the source added.
Iyer was expected to feature in India’s upcoming ODI series against South Africa starting November 30, but his participation now appears unlikely as he continues treatment in Sydney.
The BCCI has not yet given any indication about his return timeline and has said it will depend on his recovery and medical evaluation in the coming days.
